Ben has been away at a reading conference for teachers and my mom and I have been spending more time on food of course! What else would we do? We went to the farm that I bought a share of this summer and picked some pickling cucs, Mom brought over her canning pot and we put together these jars of pickles. We did 7 quarts total and they all sealed successfully! I was surprised by how easy it was, and by how addictive it is. I really understand why people get so into canning, it is very satisfying and I love the idea of being able to eat this delicious produce throughout the winter. I was able to gather most of the supplies from thrift stores and garage sales and Mom brought her pot for me to use.
We finished off our time with some peach freezer jam (which was insanely easy) and the kids got to do most of the work by peeling and smashing the peaches with their hands. I wonder what I might do next.....applesauce? peaches? berry jam? Maybe some spaghetti sauce? Yummmmmm......

Yay! We love canning, too! We've done applebutter a couple of times and also applesauce. We should probably broaden to other fruits, huh...
