Ben and I have only been able to dream about backpacking for the last four years. Children have made it impossible to venture into the back country. But finally this summer, since we have no nursing babies, my mom offered to watch the kids while we did an overnight trip.
We left on Tuesday night after we put the kids to bed, and since it stays light so late (about 10:30) we were able to make it to a forest service road just outside the park and set up our tent. The next morning we arranged our permits and set out on the trail. We were able to get permits to Red Eagle Lake on the east side of the park near St. Mary's Lake. It was a mostly level 8 miles in to our campsite, and every bit of the trail was beautiful. The wildflowers were the best either of us had ever seen, with towering peaks surrounding the meadows. We saw a moose twice on the trail (yes, the same one) and crossed a few suspension bridges.
After dinner we walked down the lake and got to see two beavers swimming in the lake and splashing around. Then they both swam right toward us and walked onto the shore about 10 feet away. They just sat there and groomed each other while we watched for at least 10 minutes. It was a true nature experience.
The best part was having so much relaxing time together with not much to worry about in such a beautiful place.
